On August 31st, 1989, Lakewood officially reached its one hundredth year. A century earlier residents of the eastern portion of Rockport Township decided to form a new community separate from the township. To do so they petitioned the commissioners of Cuyahoga County for permission to form a hamlet named "Lakewood".
